STAY GREEN AT THE MERITAGE RESORT & SPA
Napa resort implementing eco-friendly changes and improving guests well being

Napa, CA—May 1, 2008—Guests at The Meritage Resort & Spa can now add “protecting the earth” to the list of amenities offered at the unique Napa Valley destination. The resort has already put many environmentally friendly standards into place such as botanical laundry services with even greener goals for the future.  Their upcoming hotel expansion will incorporate many of the sustainability measures recommended by the U.S. Green Building Council and a composting program will be started within the next six months.

“Many of our staff members are passionate about sustainability and we hope to do our part by offering an earth-conscious stay in Napa,” said Sean Dempsey, Director of Client Relations and Business Development for The Meritage. “This is not a phase; we plan to continue an ongoing environmental focus at The Meritage.”

Initial green strides include housekeeping services, where Vaska cleaning products have replaced harsher solutions commonly used. Vaska’s botanical laundry series and deep-cleaners use natural, botanical formulations that protect fabrics, skin, surfaces, laundry employees and equipment—and the environment. Linens are left soft and naturally clean, and surfaces are disinfected without harmful byproducts. Meritage housekeeping has also incorporated reusable, microfiber cloths for cleaning and a new mopping system that reduces the amount of water used.

“Our new processes are more efficient and provide a cleaner and healthier environment for our guests and employees,” said Jose Ruperto, The Meritage Director of Rooms. “Guests can enjoy the cleanliness of our rooms without having to worry about how it got that way.”

Other green steps include a partnership with Napa County Recycling and Waste Services to implement a strong recycling program at the resort. Employees have been educated on recycling guidelines, and recycling bins are now located next to every trash can on the premises—including guest rooms. The Meritage has also replaced all paper products with recycled paper, including Kleenex, toilet paper and paper towels. Meeting planners have the option to use recycled paper for handouts, as well as utilizing biodegradable silverware and greenware plastic cups and plates rather than traditional plasticware.
